Naturally occurring hydrocarbons were the 20th century’s most important primary energy source. This – based on our current knowledge – will almost certainly remain so until the middle of the 21st century. There is a great possibility that they will not disappear off the market entirely even by the end of the century, although their importance may diminish slightly. This lecture introduces modern crude oil and natural gas bed exploitation methods, the geographical location of hydrocarbon-based energy, as well as the transport systems that now spanning the entire world – to providing a better understanding of energy and geopolitics.
